Tracy Hines Heads into Turkey Night Grand Prix in Title Contention

Three drivers will battle for the 2014 Honda USAC National Midget Series title this week in the Turkey Night Grand Prix at Perris Auto Speedway in California, and Tracy Hines will be one of them. The veteran driver is looking to add a midget title to his already impressive resume that includes an Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series title and Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series championship, which would put him in very select company, as only five drivers have ever claimed the USAC “Triple Crown,” by winning each of the three series titles.

Taylor Ferns Season in Review: A Return to Winged Sprint Car Racing

For Taylor Ferns, the 2014 season was all about learning the intricacies of 410-winged sprint car racing and getting seat time, as she returned to the 900-horsepower machines for the first time in nearly four seasons. When it was all said and done, she had earned her first winged sprint car win, along with recording several other strong runs.

Tracy Hines continued to add to his win total at Canyon Speedway Park in Arizona, taking the opener of the Honda USAC National Midget Series portion of the 47th Sands Chevrolet Western World Championships on Thursday, November 20. The win was his second in as many weeks at the track, and the fifth of his career, but his first in a midget, as the previous four had come in sprint car competition.

The list of drivers who have won the Western World Championships is a venerable “Who’s Who” of open wheel racing. Tracy Hines added his name to the prestigious list in 2011, when the event was held at then-USA Raceway in Tucson, Arizona, and split between sprint car and midget events. He returns to the history-laden event this week as it now calls Canyon Speedway Park in Arizona home for the third consecutive year, hosting the Honda USAC National Midget Series.

Keepin' It Short: Crowning a National Champion in Arkansas
by Mike Neff

The 27th Annual Comp Cams Short Track Nationals is underway at I-30 Raceway in Little Rock, Ark. Four nights of racing action began on Wednesday with the Short Track Nationals Open, an event that pays $2,000 to win. It is followed by two nights of qualifying races Thursday and Friday with $15,000 to win, $2,500 to start Nationals running on Saturday night. Over 70 ASCS Sprint Cars will be tearing around the high-banked, quarter-mile clay oval of I-30 Raceway.

In Wednesday night's preliminary action, Aaron Reutzel started in the third position and grabbed the lead on the fourth lap of the "A" main. He never looked back from that point, darting through multiple restarts and lapped traffic to take the victory. Reutzel's win was his third feature win in a row at I-30 as he beat Stevie Smith, Dalton Davis, Derek Hagar and Zach Pringle to secure the first provisional for Saturday night's main event.

Thursday's qualifying round saw 36 drivers take the to track at I-30 in an effort to qualify for Saturday's "A" main. The top three finishers in each feature race held on Thursday and Friday will be locked into Saturday's Nationals finale. They will run in the Dash for Cash on Saturday to set the starting lineup of the first three rows for the feature.

The remaining qualifiers from Thursday and Friday will redraw for eight Showdown races on Saturday night. Double passing points will be in effect for the night with the points being added to the totals from qualifying to determine the top eight in total points. Those eight drivers will fill in spots seven through 14 in the Nationals "A" main.

The next 36 drivers in points will make up the fields for the three "B" mains on Saturday night. The rest of the competitors will fill out three "C" mains. The top finishers from the Cs will advance to the Bs, where the top two finishers from each of the three Bs will fill in spots 15 through 20. The remaining spot in the field is reserved for the highest finisher among the top 4 from Wednesday night's open who has not already advanced into the "A" main.

2014 marks the 27th year for the Short Track Nationals and the list of previous winners is long and distinguished. Steve Kinser won the inaugural event in 1988 and duplicated the feat in 1989. He added a third title in 1991. Sammy Swindell took the win in 1990 then, after a 21-year absence grabbed trophies in 2011 and '13. The event was rained out in 1992. John Gerloff was victorious in 1993 and Terry Gray grabbed the trophy in 1994. Gary Wright was the Nationals champ in 1995 before becoming the only four-time winner by adding wins in '99, 2003 and '04. Pete Butler scored the victory in 1996. Wayne Johnson was the first under the checkered in 1997, while Tim Crawley took the trophy home in '98. Mike Ward was the winner in 2000 while Jason Sides is the '01 champ. Paul McMahan was the top dog in 2002 and a decade later in '12. Tim Montgomery grabbed the top spot in 2005. Jason Johnson stood in Victory Lane in 2006. Jason Myers won the following year in 2007. Tony Bruce Jr. went back-to-back in 2008 and '09, while Brad Sweet landed the title in '10.

A ticket for Friday night is $20 while you can get in the door Saturday for $28. Pit passes are $30 for Friday and $35 for Saturday. If you can't make it to Little Rock this weekend, you can catch the action on pay-per-view at
www.shorttracknationals.com.

Keepin' It Short: Time to Crown Some World Champions
by Mike Neff

The Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series runs a grueling schedule of 47 events that crisscrosses the country from Georgia to Ohio and West Virginia to Oklahoma.  After the thousands of laps and tens of thousands of miles traveled, it all comes down to this weekend.  The 34th Annual Dirt Track World Championships will be held at Portsmouth Raceway Park in Ohio.  The UMP Modifieds and Lucas Oil Dirt Late Models will be tearing up the 3/8 mile high banked clay oval to settle the season champion and rookie of the year for Lucas Oil and the World Champion for both sanctions.

Portsmouth Raceway Park opened in 1990 with a two race schedule.  In 1992 the facility was preparing for a huge two-day show over the 4th of July weekend.  There was a large amount of heavy machinery that had been brought in to make last minute preparations for the first really big race.  The night before the event the track was fogged in thanks to its picturesque location at the confluence of the Scioto River and the Ohio River.  In the middle of the night vandals climbed aboard a bull dozer and leveled the buildings, the grandstands and the restaurant on premises.  The community rallied around the track and rebuilt everything. Within two weeks of the devastation the track was reopened for business.

The facility has undergone continuous improvement and renovation.  The track now seats 10,000 people in the grandstands and 300 in the pit stands.  The track was built by Boone Coleman as a place for his son Tim to practice with his Mini Sprint.   After spending the time and effort to build the track he decided to try and make some of his money back and that is how Portsmouth Raceway Park was built.  It is now operated by Boone's widow Joyce, his son Tim and Tim's wife Jenny.  Donna Rayburn is the track promoter.

The Dirt Track World Championship started in 1981 at Pennsboro Speedway.  It has been held at numerous venues but has called Portsmouth Raceway Park home for the last three years.  The highlight of the championship this year is the title chase for the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Models.  Jimmy Owens is the defending series champion, but he is 75 points behind Don O'Neal for the lead in the points coming into the weekend.  If O'Neal can finish eighth or better Saturday, then he will be the champion.  If he can't then it will all depend on where the two combatants shake out.  If the points battle ends in a tie, Owens will win on the tie break of most wins in the season by virtue of having eight to O'Neals seven.

If you want to go to the Dirt Track World Championship, a three day general admission pass is $40.  For an extra $5 you can have a reserved seat.  For $50 you can purchase a pit pass.  Again, for an extra $5 you can have a reserved seat with the pit pass. Children from 7-11 get in for $10, under 7 are free.

When Taylor Ferns hits the track this weekend, for a pair of races in Ohio, she will have a new look to her car as Eco-Mend has come on-board as the primary sponsor of her No. 55F winged sprint car. The sponsorship of Ferns will be Eco-Mend’s first involvement in the world of motorsports. Eco-Mend is a Michigan-based, small business that specializes in environmentally conscious remediation.

The Best of Both Worlds: Taylor Ferns to Race 360 & 410 Sprint Cars this Weekend

Taylor Ferns has expanded her horizons quite a bit this season, venturing full-on into the world of 410-winged sprint car racing. She will add another item to her resume this weekend as she makes her first-career 360-winged sprint car start, along with also competing in her familiar 410-winged machine. Ferns will begin the weekend in her 360-winged sprint car at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Ohio, before hopping in her 410-car for a visit on Saturday night to the famed Eldora Speedway, also in Ohio.

URC Names 2014 Hall of Fame Inductees
Posted: September 26th, 2014
It is always a difficult decision inducting the new Hall of Fame members. The list is long of people with incredible accomplishments in URC along with those whose support made URC's long storied history possible. URC has selected five individuals to the 2014 class of Hall of Famers. Here are the 2014 Hall of Fame inductees:

Leroy Felty
No driver was more charismatic in the 1970’s on the United Racing Club trail than Leroy Felty. But his charm was coupled with a fierce driving style that made him one of the top sprint car drivers of his era. Leroy won his first URC title in 1971 over such names as Buck Buckley and Harry Benjamin with 15 wins to his credit that season. He was a bridesmaid to Harry Benjamin in the 1972 URC point chase with 3 wins, but rebounded in 1973 to win his second championship over Carl Bergkvist. Felty won 7 times in 1973 and continued his winning ways into the late 1970’s. URC is honored to induct Leroy Felty into the URC Hall of Fame.

John Wergland
John Wergland has a very storied history with URC that spanned over 3 decades. John started his racing career at age 15 when he joined the crew of the legendary Pappy Hough team. He became a URC car owner in 1960 and over a 25 year period fielded some of the biggest names in sprint car racing. Amongst his drivers were Mario Andretti, Red Riegel, Al Unser, Bobby Marvin, Johnny Rutherford, and Carl Bergkvist to name a few. John has 19 career URC wins to his credit with many different drivers. The Wergland Chevy was a threat at each and every event they attended. URC is proud to induct John Wergland to the URC Hall of Fame.

Clay Parks
Clay Parks is an executive of the Bars Products Corporation, a trusted and very valued member of the Bars Family, who overseen the company’s 20-year Tour sponsorship with the URC. Clay is more than a face associated with a sponsor; Clay is a true friend of URC. Clay always ensured URC had the tools needed to meet their sponsorship requirements, and always went the extra mile for URC, despite being busy traveling worldwide for Bars Leaks/Rislone. Clay even flew out from Michigan to pay respect to URC’s fallen hero, Kramer Williamson. It is his good nature, professionalism, and friendship that earned Clay Parks a spot in the URC Hall of Fame.

Don Kerr
If ever there was a car owner for the ages, it would certainly have been Don Kerr . Kerr entered the URC scene without much attention until he hired a modified driver with a long list of credentials…enter Glenn Fitzcharles. Kerr’s cars were always immaculately prepared and rarely suffered any mechanical problems. Kerr would dominate in 1987 and many subsequent seasons with 21 incredible wins in the 1987 season alone…yes, 21 wins in a season! Kerr was a quiet man, and a man who would help any of his fellow competitors in the pits and loved racing with URC. In 1988, he garnered 12 wins with Fitzcharles at the helm, and continued his winning ways until his retirement. Kerr won 4 straight URC car owner championships. It is Kerr’s high standards of performance above and beyond the norm that earns him a coveted spot in the URC Hall of Fame.

Charlie Cathell
Throughout our 67 year history, URC has raced for many promoters. Charlie Cathell has hosted more URC events than any other promoter in URC history. Charlie has always provided racers with a great racing surface for decades. Charlie and his family have put their heart and soul into their speedway and take great pride in providing their racers with a first class facility. Charlie has hosted as many as 10 URC events in a single season. Charlie continues to be a supporter and friend of URC. Charlie’s unparalleled support of URC has earned him a place in the URC Hall of Fame.
