Keepin' It Short: Crowning the King of California Sprints
by Mike Neff

The USAC/CRA Sprints are in the midst of California Sprint Week. The series holds five races in eight days at four tracks around the state. The week kicked off last weekend at historic Calistoga Speedway with the Louie Vermeil Classic. Christopher Bell took home the hardware on Saturday night while Rico Abreu was the winner on Sunday. The week continues Thursday at Chico before heading to Watsonville and concluding at Santa Maria.

The USAC/CRA Sprints are a Californiacentric division of USAC that races all of its events in the state except the season opener and the season finale, which take place in Peoria, Ariz. The western United States is a true hot bed for Sprint car racing and California Sprint Week gives a driver bragging rights that he can not only carry for a year but for his entire life.

Saturday's races at Calistoga saw Christopher Bell score his first every USAC/CRA win. Ryan Bernal was the dominant car of the event but, after Bud Kaeding flipped and brought out a red flag, Bernal's car would not refire and he was forced to retire from the event. Once Bernal was out of the picture, Bell ran away from the field to score his victory. Damion Gardner crossed the line in second ahead of Abreu, Brody Roa and Robert Ballou. Abreu was also victorious in the USAC Western Midget Feature that was run in conjunction with the Sprint race.

Sunday it was Abreu's turn to grab the hardware in the Sprint cars. It was Abreu's second non-winged Sprint start of the year and he made a late-race pass to score the win. Saturday's winner Bell led 18 laps of the feature before settling for a third-place finish. Kevin Thomas, Jr. came home in second while Geoff Ensign and Colby Copeland rounded out the top 5. Bell was the winner of the $10,000 midget feature that ran alongside the Sprints.

Current point standings heading into Thursday night's feature for California Sprint Week.

A note about Louis Vermeil: Vermeil was a fixture in California Sprint Car racing for over five decades. His influence was critical in the development of racing and racers in the West for most of his life. Vermeil was a car owner and a sanctioning body president whose passion for racing not only helped shape the sport but helped men who had the desire to race realize their dreams. Vermeil and his wife Alice provided the avenue for so many of the Sprint Car racers in northern California from the thirties through the eighties that he now has his own race at Calistoga Speedway.

If you are in the Watsonville or Santa Maria area this weekend, head over to check out the best Sprint Car drivers in the western states. The history and tradition of Sprint Cars in California will be on display with the latest standard bearers of the sport.

Keepin' It Short: It's Time for the Biggest of the Big
by Mike Neff

Keepin' it Short always likes to look for the big events - whether it is the Chili Bowl, the Snowball Derby, the World 100 or the Super DIRT Week, the big races are highlights of the racing season.

This coming week in Boone, Iowa, is the biggest of them all. The Super Nationals at Boone Speedway draw in more competitors and put on more races in a six-day period than any other event in racing. In 2013 there were 824 competitors who raced during the Super Nationals. They run races in Hobby Stocks, Sport Compacts, SportMods, Stock Cars, Northern SportMods and the signature division Modifieds.

The racing begins on Monday Deery Brothers Late Models, Hobby Stocks and Northern SportMods. Tuesday features Sport Compacts, Hobby Stocks, Northern SportMods and SportMods. Wednesday has Stock Cars and more Hobby Stocks, SportMods and Northern SportMods. Thursday will see the Stock Cars, SportMods and the beginning of Modified action. Friday will showcase the Stock Cars, SportMods and the All-Star Invitational. The Invitational will feature a field of 30 Modified drivers selected by fans. Saturday is the big day with SportMods, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, and Modifieds.

The racing is obviously the focal point of the week but it is not the entire experience. The manufacturer's row will have over 40 vendors showcasing their wares to the fans and competitors. There is a party on Sunday before the week begins that features live music and sets the tone for the whole week. The whole week is a family camping extravaganza with thousands of people on the grounds enthralled by racing and the general camaraderie of socializing with people with a similar love for racing.

One highlight of the week that is truly unique to Boone is the track preparation. The art of preparing a race track is part science, part brute force and part voodoo. The people at Boone have turned it into a choreographed dance of farm equipment like no one has seen anywhere else. In less than 15 minutes the track crew tills up the track, waters it and repacks it for more races. This action doesn't take place once a night. Depending on weather conditions and the races that have taken place the track will be prepped as quickly as every six races or as long as every 15 races. The average is about every 10.

For those folks who can't make it to Boone, the opportunity to watch the Nationals is available online through XSAN, which will have a free preview from the Sprint Car Nationals at Eagle Raceway in Nebraska on Saturday. The entire Super Nationals can be seen, at least 10 hours of racing per day for six days, for $150. If you are in the Midwest and you want to head to Boone the ticket prices for the grandstand seats are $20 on Monday and Friday, $15 Tuesday through Thursday and then $25 on Saturday.

There are big races all season long and some are bigger than others. The Super Nationals in Boone are the biggest and you don't want to miss them.

This week's racing schedule can be found here.

Why do racers race? Despite dangers, the thrill of racing is like no other experience

By DOUG ELKINS (Post-Standard) With all the negative attention the sport of racing has received the past few years — and especially the last 12 days with the death of a local racer involving a national star — a lot of folks might have asked the obvious question: Why do racers race?
