Strunk Earns First Albany-Saratoga DIRTcar Modified Win

Malta, NY – Race fans at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway are used to seeing the Vinny Salerno owned four star machine sitting in victory lane following the night’s Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified feature event. The win was Strunk’s first career triumph at the fast, four tenths of a mile oval…More

Keepin' It Short: Short Track Racing Saved From Extinction
by Mike Neff

Everyone who has ever raced or worked on a race car at a local track or a national series venue has done it. You go to the sign-in gate and put your signature on the 15-inch long pad filled with legalese. Some people may have read it once but, for the most part, you sign it because you have to and you want to race.

The purpose is to release the race track from liability if you get hurt. It doesn’t give them free license to run a death trap but, provided they make every reasonable effort to make the place safe, you acknowledge that racing is dangerous and you might get hurt.

This week in Pennsylvania that premise was challenged. In 2008, John Westbrook flipped over the wall at Williams Grove Speedway and went down an embankment to an access road. He suffered injuries that left him a quadriplegic. He sued the speedway for negligence, claiming a catch fence would have prevented the injuries he sustained.

Williams Grove argued that, by signing the waiver, Westbrook released the speedway from liability. Westbrook’s attorney argued that the waiver did not have the date line or witness line completed so it was not a valid release.

A jury sided with Williams Grove and supported the validity of the release waiver, and that single decision very well saved local short track racing from extinction.

The release of liability waiver is what allows local race tracks to put on events with an insurance policy that is affordable. It prevents the speedways from losing everything in the event of a catastrophic incident but the premiums are reasonable due to the fact that the speedways are released from liability for every little nick, scrape, cut or serious injury due to racing. The sport of auto racing is inherently dangerous. Whether racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series or at Kam Kartway in Texas, the potential for injury or death is very real. If every race track was liable for every single injury, the insurance premiums would be crippling.

In reality, if the race tracks were liable for everyone the odds are that insurance would be impossible to secure. Most, if not all race tracks in the country would probably close due to the enormous financial burden of paying insurance premiums. Those tracks that were able to stay open would have to charge such high ticket prices and back gate fees to cover their insurance premiums that people would not be able to afford to go to or compete in races. In the end it would have been the death knell for local short track racing.

As it is, the system that is currently in place has been upheld. Tracks do have the responsibility to make every sensible effort to provide a safe racing environment. However, racing has an inherent risk and the competitors and their crew members must accept a large part of that burden themselves. That relationship is what makes local racing work and thankfully a jury in Pennsylvania was able to understand that and save local racing from extinction.

Keepin' It Short: It's A Sprint/Speedweek Type Of Season
by Mike Neff

Various sanctioning bodies have different mini tours that host a number of races on several nights over a short period of time. Last week, we spoke about the Hell Tour that is in full swing. It encompasses the DIRTCar Late Models and the UMP Modifieds. Last week was also Indiana Midget Week. Rico Abreu dominated the action to take the title. This coming week is Ohio Sprint Week, which will see the UNOH All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars hit eight speedways in nine nights for nine races.

The action doesn't stop there. Pennsylvania Sprint Week runs from June27th through July 6th. Indiana Sprint Week is July 11th through July 19th. The Midwest Open Wheel Association hosts the Illinois Sprint Week July 23rd through July 26th. This is just a handful of the “weeks” that will take place throughout the Summer showcasing the talented racers who are chasing the dream of climbing the racing ladder.

During the Indiana Midget Week, Rico Abreu made the trip from California to take on the best of the best in the Midwest and ended up dominating the competition. The opening night was rained out so the de facto opener was at Lincoln Park Speedway. Abreu came home third to start the week off positively. He followed that up with a runner-up finish at Bloomington the next night. He took the final step up the finishing ladder with a win at Lawrenceburg. His final run to wrap up the week saw him on the podium again at Kokomo with a third place finish. Four top-3 finishes in four days allowed Abreu to easily walk away with the title for the week. It also has him solidly in the lead of the USAC National Midget points. He has 481 points which has him 93 points ahead of Tracy Hines and 94 ahead of 2014 Chili Bowl champion and 2013 USAC National Sprint Car champion Bryan Clauson.

This coming week, the stars of the All-Star Circuit of Champions will be putting on a great show all around the state of Ohio. The series has run 12 races this year so far and 11 different drivers have scored wins. The opening race at Attica will see Dale Blaney returning to one of his favorite tracks on the series schedule. Blaney has won three times at Attica already this season including a run with the World of Outlaws and his 100th win in the All-Star Circuit. Blaney has 20 career wins at Attica with 14 of them coming in the All-Star series. The next race on the schedule will be Eldora Speedway, which has hosted 134 races in the history of the All-Stars, the most of any track. Jac Haudenschild swept the All-Star races at Eldora last season, we'll see if he can win the Sprint Week race again this year.

The week, they'll visit Fremont Speedway, the home of the All-Stars, twice during the week. It is the only repeat venue on the schedule during the week. Sharon Speedway will host a night. The track is the home to point leader Blaney and is partly owned by his brother Dave Blaney, who has won an All-Star Sprint race this season along with running in some Cup series events. The week will wrap up at Fremont with a $10,000 to win race that will see the champion for the week crowned.

Coming into the week, the point leader in the All-Star series is Dale Blaney. He is being chased by Tim Shaffer, Jac Haudenschild, Danny Holtgraver and Chad Kemenah. The 11 drivers who have taken the checkered flag first this season in the All-Star series include: Dave Blaney, Kerry Madsen, Joey Saldana, Dale Blaney, Greg Hodnett, Lee Jacobs (2 wins), Jack Haudenschild, Caleb Griffith, James McFadden, Danny Holtgraver and Danny Dietrich. Dietrich is the most recent winner in the series and is planning to run the early portion of the Sprint Speedweek.

If you are in the Ohio area and have $20-$25 in your pocket over the next week, you should head out the catch some of the All-Star Circuit of Champions actions during Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

That means Dietrich could, weather permitting, run 16 races in 17 nights. Now, that’s old school. Dietrich hasn’t competed at any of the race tracks on the Ohio slate, but we have him penciled in for at least one win before his return…More

Keepin' It Short: The Ultimate Test of Man and Machine
by Mike Neff

The DIRTCar Summer Nationals pits the best Super Dirt Late Model racers in the county against each other during a 39-day odyssey that stretches across nine states. Thirty-three nights of racing in a month and nine days not only test the machines that are racing and the men driving them -- it also tests the support crews, the equipment that gets the teams from track to track and the mental health of everyone involved. The tour is also nicknamed the Hell Tour because it puts the people involved through hell throughout the trek.

The journey from the beginning to the end of the tour is over 5,500 miles. The northernmost speedway on the tour is Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisc. The track is just outside of Minneapolis, Minn. The southernmost speedway is Clayhill Motorsports in Atwood, Tenn. The westernmost track is 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa, and the easternmost venue is Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio.

The Summer Nationals started in 1988 with six races that ran from July 12 through July 17 with no break. Dick Taylor won three of the six races while Pete Parker was crowned the champion. In 1989 it expanded to 10 races with Rick Standridge taking the title. 1997 was the first year that the tour hit the 20-race mark. Rick Aukland came home with the championship trophy at the end of the final race in Owatonna, Minn. In 2013 the schedule expanded to over 30 races, although several dates were lost to rain. The champion was Brandon Sheppard.

The champion list of the Hell Tour is packed with some of the biggest names in Dirt Super Late Model racing. Billy Moyer has taken home the crown six times in his career, the most of any driver. Scott Bloomquist, Don O'Neal, Shannon Babb, Dennis Erb, Jr. and Jason Feger are just some of the other well known drivers who have had their name on the big check at the end of the tour. Babb and Moyer are tied for the all-time lead in tour victories with 82 each. Don O'Neal is third on that list with just 39 wins. Forty-eight drivers have won more than one race during the history of the tour and 36 others have scored a single triumph.

If you are in the Midwest over the next 37 days, you should try and find your way to a track for one of the Summer Nationals dates. You'll get to see some of the best Super Dirt Late Model racing around.

McDowell Completes Unfinished Business with Dream Victory

ROSSBURG, Ohio (June 7) — Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., completed some unfinished business on Saturday night at Eldora Speedway. Nine years after inheriting a triumph in the prestigious World 100 that left him feeling less than satisfied, the 48-year-old veteran captured the famed half-mile oval’s other, richer crown-jewel event with a convincing drive to the checkered flag in the Dream XX presented by Ferris Mowers. McDowell stormed forward from the 22nd starting spot to grab the lead from six-time Dream champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., on lap 79 and never looked back en route to claiming the $100,000…More
