Today, instead of Saturday's XFINITY Series broadcast from Sonoma, we're going to discuss Wednesday's big announcement from INDYCAR.  In case you missed it, INDYCAR announced they are going to be exclusive to NBC Sports starting next year. 

Personally, I'm not surprised they decided to go in that direction.

NBC Sports (and specifically NBCSN) has been a supporter of INDYCAR for years.  Remember, 2018 is the final year of a 10-year deal inked back in 2008 when NBCSN was still Versus.
 
In the preceding years, INDYCAR was treated seriously at NBCSN and given the respect they deserve.  The network has gone out of their way to try and grow the sport.  Think of the IndyCar 36 shows that they've aired over the years.  We've critiqued a couple of them in this space, most notably the one that covered Kurt Busch's attempt at the Indy-Charlotte double.
 
At one point, NBCSN tried a daily show dedicated to INDYCAR that was designed to be similar to NASCAR America.  If you think viewership for something like NASCAR America is bad, they struggled to get quintuple-digit viewership for that show.  That's despite the fact the content was actually pretty good.
 
NBCSN did have some growing pains over the years.  Jon Beekhuis is literally the only on-air personality left from when Versus first showed up.  There was an instance in which Beekhuis and Jack Arute got in an argument during a race at Homestead back in 2010.  The races in Sao Paulo were an exercise in futility at times since Versus would only send one person (Kevin Lee) to the race and have the booth stay in the states and call the event remotely.
 
In the case of INDYCAR's other current media partner, ABC/ESPN, they really only cared about their own interests.  Anyone who watched the season opener from St. Petersburg would have noticed they only promoted the upcoming schedule of races they're airing.  ESPN's second race is the Grand Prix of Indianapolis in May.  There are three races (Phoenix, Long Beach and Barber Park) between now and then. 

To ESPN, those three events might as well not exist.  Now, for diehard fans, that kind of move is really noticeable.  For the not-so-diehards, they might not know the difference.  Such a move is unconscionable if you're trying to grow your viewership in partnership with the sanctioning body.
 
Along those lines, the new NBC deal brings an increase in the number of races on broadcast TV from five to eight.  With all the changes in television recently, that still means something.  It's still easiest to find programming if it's available on over-the-air TV.  
 
The announcement indicates the other races will be live on NBCSN.  We'll have to see how that works out.  The past couple of years have seen the Honda Indy Toronto aired live on CNBC, then on tape-delay on NBCSN.  We'll see if that still happens.
 
Given NBC's sports holdings, you'll see the vast majority of over-the-air races on broadcast air prior to July.  In addition to the two Indianapolis centerpieces, expect events such as St. Petersburg, Long Beach and the Detroit duals to be on NBC.  Expect Indianapolis 500 qualifying to be at least partially on NBC as well.  The other two races seem to be wild cards.
 
Basically, this deal is a net positive except for the practice coverage.  Everything that isn't shown live on NBC or NBCSN will air on NBC Sports Gold.  That's is a pay service available via NBCSports.com used for smaller events (Ex: Live coverage of some Lucas Oil Motocross, cycling events and Premier League games that used to be free to stream on the now-NBC Sports App).  Basically, they're going to make you pay for what INDYCAR currently livestreams for free on INDYCAR.com and YouTube. 

I don't see a positive there for fans, although it could be a positive for INDYCAR financially.  That said, every INDYCAR qualifying session in 2019 should be televised.  We can't say that now for the ESPN races other than the Indianapolis 500.

Also of note, INDYCAR is without an title sponsor to replace Verizon for next season.  Having this deal done will definitely help them find a company that will commit themselves to the series.  Verizon did to a certain extent.  IZOD basically didn't, especially the last couple of years.  That said, this deal is better than what the series had when IZOD showed up, making it a little bit easier to entice someone.
 
The new deal will bind INDYCAR to a group that has experience with the sport and wants it to succeed.  Unlike ABC/ESPN, the network appears to care much more about the sport than just the Indianapolis 500 and wants to see it grow.  Also, you'll have the same on-air crew for the whole season, which will help with continuity.  The positives do outweigh the negatives here.
